Single-mode fiber color

Single-mode fiber is typically identified by a yellow jacket, with blue connectors for UPC polish and green connectors for APC polish.Jacket Color

The outer jacket of single-mode fiber cables is usually yellow, which distinguishes it from multimode fibers that are often orange, aqua, or other colors depending on the type (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4) and performance requirements . This color coding allows technicians to quickly identify the fiber type in installations and maintenance.

Connector Color

Single-mode fiber connectors follow a color convention to indicate the type of polish:

  • Blue connectors indicate UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) polish, which has a flat endface and is used for general long-distance single-mode links .
  • Green connectors indicate APC (Angled Physical Contact) polish, which has an 8-degree angled endface to reduce back reflection, ideal for high-performance single-mode links such as FTTx or RF video applications . It is crucial not to mix UPC and APC connectors, as the mismatch can cause permanent damage to the fiber core and signal loss .
Internal Fiber Color Coding

Inside the cable, individual fibers are color-coded according to the TIA/EIA-598-C standard, which uses a 12-color sequence for identification: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate (Gray), White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, and Aqua . For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with additional markings to distinguish groups.

Summary
  • Single-mode fiber jacket: Yellow
  • UPC connector: Blue
  • APC connector: Green
  • Internal fiber identification: Standard 12-color sequence per TIA-598-C This standardized color coding ensures efficient installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of fiber optic networks while minimizing errors and downtime .
