One section of optical cable

A section of an optical cable consists of a core, cladding, protective coatings, strength members, and an outer jacket, all designed to transmit light efficiently while providing mechanical protection.Core and Cladding

The core is the central part of the optical fiber, typically made of highly pure glass (silicon dioxide) or sometimes plastic, which carries the light signals over long distances . Surrounding the core is the cladding, a layer with a slightly lower refractive index that ensures total internal reflection, keeping the light confined within the core .

Protective Coatings

The core and cladding are coated with one or more layers of acrylate or polyimide polymer, which protect the fiber from physical damage and microbending that could increase signal loss . These coatings do not affect the optical properties but provide cushioning and durability.

Strength Members

To enhance mechanical stability, optical cables include strength members, often made of steel, Kevlar, or other high-tensile materials. These components prevent stretching and protect the fibers from tension during installation and environmental stress .

Cable Jacket

The outer jacket or sheath encases the entire assembly, providing protection against moisture, chemicals, and physical abrasion. Outdoor cables may include additional layers such as aluminum tape or tube-filling gel to resist environmental factors, while indoor cables often use tight-buffered fibers for easier handling .

Fiber Arrangement

Fibers can be arranged in loose tubes for outdoor cables, allowing expansion and contraction without stressing the fibers, or tight-buffered configurations for indoor use, which offer more protection and easier termination . Each tube may contain multiple fibers, supporting different transmission standards like G.652.D or G.657.A1 .

Summary

A cross-section of an optical cable reveals a carefully engineered structure: the core transmits light, the cladding confines it, coatings and strength members protect it, and the outer jacket shields the cable from environmental and mechanical damage. This design ensures reliable, high-speed data transmission over long distances in both indoor and outdoor applications .

Optical fiber is used as a medium for telecommunication and computer networking because it is flexible and can be bundled as cables. It is especially advantageous for long-distance communications, because infrared light propagates through the fiber with much lower attenuation compared to electricity in electrical cables. This allows long distances to be spanned with few repeaters.
