Router optical module pairing

To pair a router with an optical module, insert the module into the router's SFP port, connect the fiber optic cable correctly, and configure the router for your ISP's connection type.Step 1: Prepare the Equipment

Ensure you have the following:

  • Router with SFP or fiber-ready port
  • Compatible optical module (SFP/GPON module)
  • Fiber optic cable (usually SC/APC or SC/UPC connectors)
  • Dust plugs and labels for fiber protection and identification
  • Ethernet cable if connecting via an ONT instead of direct fiber .
Step 2: Install the Optical Module
  1. Remove the dust plug from the router's SFP port.
  2. Gently insert the optical module into the port until you hear a click. If it doesn't fit, rotate the module 180 degrees and try again. Do not force it .
  3. Keep the dust plug from the module in a safe place until you connect the fiber.
Step 3: Connect the Fiber Optic Cable
  1. Remove the dust caps from both ends of the fiber cable.
  2. Label both ends temporarily to identify transmit (TX) and receive (RX) ends.
  3. Connect the fiber cable to the optical module, ensuring the TX and RX ends match the module's ports. Do not reverse the connections .
  4. Replace temporary labels with permanent ones for future reference.
Step 4: Configure the Router
  • Access the router's configuration interface via a web browser (commonly 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
  • Set the connection type according to your ISP requirements, often PPPoE over VLAN for fiber connections. Enter the username and password provided by your ISP .
  • Enable any optional settings like Quality of Service (QoS) if you need prioritized traffic for VoIP or video calls .
Step 5: Verify the Connection
  • Power on the router and check the status lights on both the optical module and router.
  • Ensure the link is active and the router receives an IP address from the ISP.
  • Test internet connectivity to confirm proper pairing.
Best Practices
  • Handle fiber cables carefully to avoid bending or damaging the strands.
  • Keep dust plugs on unused ports to prevent contamination.
  • Use high-quality Ethernet cables (Cat6a or higher) if connecting through an ONT to maintain full fiber speeds .
  • If the connection fails, double-check TX/RX alignment, module compatibility, and ISP credentials. By following these steps, your router should be successfully paired with the optical module, providing a stable and high-speed fiber connection.
