Principle of Sensor-type Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic sensors operate by detecting changes in light properties within an optical fiber, with the fiber itself or an external transducer acting as the sensing element.Basic Principle

Fiber optic sensors (FOS) use optical fibers to detect physical, chemical, or biological changes by monitoring variations in light properties such as intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength, or transit time. The optical fiber can either serve as the sensing element itself or act as a conduit to transmit light to and from an external sensor. Light travels through the fiber core by total internal reflection, and any interaction with the measurand (the quantity being measured) alters the light signal, which is then analyzed to determine the sensed parameter .

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors
  1. Intrinsic Sensors In intrinsic fiber optic sensors, the fiber itself is the sensing element. Changes in temperature, strain, pressure, or other physical quantities directly affect the light traveling through the fiber. For example, fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) reflect specific wavelengths of light that shift in response to strain or temperature, enabling precise measurements .
  2. Extrinsic Sensors Extrinsic sensors use the fiber primarily as a light transmission medium. The actual sensing occurs in an external transducer, and the fiber carries the modulated light to a detector. This configuration is useful for remote or hazardous locations, such as inside jet engines or electrical transformers, where conventional sensors cannot operate .
  3. Hybrid Sensors Hybrid sensors combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles, allowing the fiber to both carry light and participate in sensing, enhancing flexibility and sensitivity in complex applications .
Working Mechanisms

Fiber optic sensors detect changes through several mechanisms:

  • Intensity Modulation: Light intensity varies with the measurand, requiring only a light source and detector.
  • Phase or Interferometric Modulation: Changes in optical path length or phase shift are measured, often using interferometers.
  • Wavelength Modulation: Used in FBG sensors, where reflected wavelength shifts indicate strain or temperature changes.
  • Polarization Modulation: Changes in light polarization correspond to external influences like stress or electric fields.
  • Scattering-based Sensing: Rayleigh, Raman, or Brillouin scattering in the fiber provides distributed sensing over long distances .
Advantages

Fiber optic sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference, can operate in high-voltage or flammable environments, and allow remote and distributed sensing over long distances. They are also compact, lightweight, and capable of high-precision measurements, making them suitable for applications in structural health monitoring, aerospace, biomedical, and industrial environments .

Summary

The principle of sensor-type fiber optic sensors relies on modulating light within an optical fiber in response to external physical, chemical, or biological stimuli. Depending on the configuration—intrinsic, extrinsic, or hybrid—the fiber either acts as the sensing element or transmits light to an external sensor, enabling highly sensitive, remote, and versatile measurements in challenging environments .

Fiber-optic sensor

A fiber-optic sensor is a sensor that uses optical fiber either as the sensing element ("intrinsic sensors"), or as a means of relaying signals from a remote sensor to the electronics that process the signals ("extrinsic sensors"). Fibers have many uses in remote sensing. Depending on the application, fiber may be used because of its small size, or because no electrical power is needed at the remote location, or because many sensors can be multiplexed along the length of a fiber by using light wavelength shift for
