Ordinary buried optical cable

Ordinary buried optical cables are fiber optic cables designed for direct underground installation, typically armored for protection and buried at a depth of around 1.2 meters.Overview

Ordinary buried optical cables, also known as direct-buried fiber optic cables, are engineered to be installed directly into the ground without the need for protective ducts or conduits. They are widely used in FTTH networks, backbone infrastructure, and industrial communication systems where durability, safety, and long-term reliability are essential .

Structure and Protection

These cables often use a GYTA53 structure, which includes a polyethylene outer sheath and chrome-plated steel strips for mechanical protection. This design provides resistance against crushing, rodent damage, and environmental stress. Inside, the cable contains loose tube fibers or ribbon fibers, which are lightweight, high-density, and allow for efficient splicing and handling .

Installation Method
  1. Trench Excavation: A trench is dug to a depth of approximately 1.2 meters in ordinary or hard soil.
  2. Cable Laying: The optical cable is placed at the bottom of the trench, either manually or using mechanical equipment such as a vibratory plow .
  3. Backfilling: Soil is backfilled over the cable to protect it from surface activity.
  4. Marker Stones: To facilitate future maintenance, marker stones are often placed on the surface every 50 meters to indicate the cable's location .
Advantages and Considerations
  • Durability: Armored direct-buried cables provide excellent protection against physical damage and environmental factors .
  • Safety: Direct burial reduces exposure to accidental cuts compared to aerial installations .
  • Cost and Maintenance: While safe, direct-buried cables can be more expensive to install and maintain, and expanding capacity can be challenging .
  • Applications: Commonly used in rural areas, deserts, or grasslands where overhead lines are impractical, and duct infrastructure is unavailable .
Comparison with Other Methods

Unlike conduit-based installations, direct-buried cables are simpler to deploy but are more susceptible to soil movement and accidental excavation. They are also different from aerial cables, which are suspended on poles and easier to access but more exposed to environmental hazards . In summary, ordinary buried optical cables are a reliable solution for underground fiber deployment, offering mechanical protection, long-term durability, and suitability for areas without duct infrastructure, though they require careful planning for installation and maintenance .
