Distribution box wired switch

A distribution box wired switch setup safely distributes power to multiple circuits using MCBs, RCCBs, and switches, ensuring protection against overloads, short circuits, and electric shocks.Components of a Distribution Box

A typical distribution box includes:

  • Main Switch / Main MCB: Usually a double-pole MCB that controls the incoming power supply and protects the entire system from overload and short circuits .
  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against electric shock and leakage currents, typically rated at 30mA for domestic installations .
  • Single-Pole MCBs: Protect individual outgoing circuits for lighting, sockets, or appliances .
  • Busbars, Neutral and Earth Bars: Facilitate organized connections for phase, neutral, and earth wires .
  • DIN Rail: Mounting rail for MCBs and RCCBs for easy installation and maintenance .
Wiring Procedure
  1. Incoming Supply Connection: Connect the phase and neutral wires from the main supply to the input terminals of the main MCB .
  2. Main MCB to RCCB: Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB. This ensures that all downstream circuits are protected against leakage currents .
  3. RCCB to Output MCBs: Connect the output terminals of the RCCB to the input of individual single-pole MCBs for each circuit .
  4. Outgoing Circuits: Connect the output terminals of each MCB to the respective load circuits (lights, sockets, or appliances). Ensure proper labeling for easy identification .
  5. Neutral and Earth Connections: Connect all neutral wires to the neutral bar and all earth wires to the earth bar. Ensure secure and tight connections to prevent loose contacts .
Safety and Best Practices
  • Always turn off the main supply before wiring.
  • Use properly rated MCBs and RCCBs according to the load and fault current capacity .
  • Maintain clear separation between phase, neutral, and earth wires to avoid short circuits.
  • Ensure the distribution box has adequate IP rating for protection against dust and moisture if installed outdoors .
  • Leave spare ways in the box for future expansion .
