Fiber Optic Cable Splicing Sequence Steps Diagram

Fiber optic splicing involves a precise sequence of preparation, alignment, fusion, and protection to ensure a low-loss, permanent connection between two fibers.Step-by-Step Fusion Splicing Process
  1. Cable Preparation
    • Strip the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable using a cable slitter to expose the inner fibers (typically 3–5 cm) .
    • Remove the buffer coating carefully to expose the bare fiber, avoiding tension or bending below a 30 mm radius .
    • Clean the exposed fiber with an IPA-soaked swab to remove dust and contaminants .
  2. Fiber Protection Sleeve Placement
    • Slide a fiber protection sleeve onto the fiber before cleaving. This sleeve will later protect the splice point .
    • Ensure the sleeve is threaded before preparing the fiber end face to avoid contamination.
  3. Cleaving the Fiber
    • Use a fiber cleaver to cut the fiber ends precisely at a 90° angle. A clean, perpendicular cleave is critical for low-loss splicing .
  4. Fusion Splicing
    • Place the prepared fiber ends into the fusion splicer, aligning them in the V-groove .
    • The splicer uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the fiber ends, creating a continuous optical path .
    • Monitor the fusion process for bubbles, misalignment, or irregular melting. Adjust parameters like pre-melting and main melting current as needed .
  5. Splice Loss Verification
    • After fusion, check the splice loss. A loss below 0.03 dB is considered acceptable .
    • Re-cleave and re-splice if the loss exceeds acceptable limits .
  6. Fiber Protection and Heating
    • Slide the fiber protection sleeve over the splice point.
    • Place the sleeve in the splicer's heating zone to shrink and secure it, ensuring the splice is mechanically protected .
  7. Final Inspection
    • Inspect the splice visually or with an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) to confirm alignment and signal integrity .
Tools Required
  • Fusion splicer
  • Fiber cleaver
  • Cable stripper and fiber optic stripper
  • Alcohol and dust-free cloth
  • Fiber protection sleeves
