Cable and Optical Fiber Inspection Tape

Inspection tape is a key tool for cleaning and maintaining fiber optic connectors, ensuring optimal signal transmission and preventing contamination.Purpose of Inspection Tape

Inspection tape, often referred to as cleaning tape or cleaning reels, is used to remove dust, debris, and other contaminants from the end faces of fiber optic connectors and bulkheads. Clean connectors are critical because even microscopic particles can cause signal loss, reflection, or damage when fibers are mated with other connectors . The tape provides a dry cleaning method, which is safe, efficient, and reduces the risk of contamination migration across connectors .

How It Works
  1. Opening the Shutter: Most cleaning tapes have a lever or shutter mechanism. Opening it exposes a fresh section of the tape for cleaning .
  2. Cleaning the Ferrule End: The ferrule end of the fiber connector is pressed against the tape and slid across it to remove contaminants .
  3. Replacing the Tape: When the tape section is used, the lever is released, and the shutter closes. Replacement reels are available, often providing over 500 cleanings per reel, making them cost-effective .
Types and Compatibility

Inspection tapes are designed to work with a variety of connector types, including SC, LC, FC, ST, MU, DIN, and E2000. They are available in different sizes to match connector ferrules, such as 1.25mm and 2.5mm swabs for bulkheads .

Integration with Inspection Tools

Inspection tapes are often used alongside fiber optic inspection scopes or automated inspection tools like the FIP100, which capture images of connector end faces and provide pass/fail results . This ensures that connectors are not only clean but also free from scratches or defects that could impair performance.

Benefits
  • Quick and effective cleaning of multiple connector types
  • Reduces contamination migration between connectors
  • Cost-efficient with replaceable reels
  • Supports field and lab use, compatible with inspection kits and portable cleaning tools
Best Practices
  • Always inspect the fiber end face before and after cleaning to ensure proper performance .
  • Use the correct tape size for the connector type to avoid incomplete cleaning.
  • Replace the tape reel when the cleaning surface is worn or contaminated.
  • Combine with dry or wet cleaning methods if heavy contamination is present . Inspection tape is an essential component of fiber optic maintenance, helping technicians maintain high network performance and reliability while minimizing downtime and signal degradation .
