Actual wiring of the indoor distribution box at the outlet

The indoor distribution box connects the main supply to branch circuits via MCBs and RCCBs, distributing power safely to outlets with proper neutral and earth connections.Components Overview

An indoor distribution box typically includes:

  • Main MCB (Double Pole): Acts as the main switch, receiving the incoming phase and neutral supply from the utility or energy meter .
  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against leakage currents and electric shocks, usually rated at 30mA for domestic installations .
  • Single-Pole MCBs: Protect individual branch circuits, such as lighting or socket outlets .
  • Neutral and Earth Links: Distribute neutral and earth connections to all branch circuits .
Wiring Sequence
  1. Incoming Supply Connection: Connect the live (phase) and neutral wires from the utility to the input terminals of the main MCB .
  2. Main MCB to RCCB: Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB. This ensures all downstream circuits are protected against leakage .
  3. RCCB to Branch MCBs: Connect the output terminals of the RCCB to the input of each single-pole MCB for individual circuits .
  4. Branch Circuit Wiring:
    • Phase Wire: Connect from the output of the MCB to the live terminal of the outlet.
    • Neutral Wire: Connect from the neutral link to the neutral terminal of the outlet.
    • Earth Wire: Connect from the earth link to the outlet's earth terminal .
  5. Wire Color Coding (IEC standard):
    • Phase (Live): Brown or Red
    • Neutral: Blue
    • Earth: Green/Yellow
Installation Tips
  • Arrange MCBs from left to right, with reserved positions on the right for future expansion .
  • Use appropriate wire gauge: typically 2.5mm² for lighting and socket circuits, 4mm² for high-power appliances like air conditioners .
  • Keep wiring neat using cable ties and proper routing: incoming wires on the left, outgoing wires to outlets on the right .
  • Ensure all connections are tight and perform a safety inspection with a multimeter before powering on .
  • Label each circuit clearly for easy identification and maintenance .
Safety Considerations
  • Always switch off the main supply before wiring.
  • Verify proper earthing to prevent electric shocks.
  • Use UL/CE-certified components and comply with local electrical codes (NEC, IEC, or regional standards), .
  • Schedule periodic inspections to ensure long-term reliability . By following this wiring sequence and safety practices, the indoor distribution box will safely distribute power to all outlets while protecting against overloads, short circuits, and leakage faults.
