How to connect a broken fiber optic cable

Repairing a broken fiber optic cable involves carefully preparing the cable ends, splicing or re-terminating the fibers, and testing the connection for signal integrity.Step 1: Assess and Prepare the Cable

First, identify the location and extent of the damage. If the cable is completely severed, you will need to splice the two ends together. For minor outer jacket damage, you may only need to re-terminate the connectors. Clean both ends of the fiber using a lint-free cloth and fiber optic cleaning solution to remove dust and oils, which can interfere with light transmission .

Step 2: Strip and Cleave the Fiber

Use a fiber optic stripper to remove approximately 1.5–2 inches of the outer jacket and Kevlar strands, exposing the bare fiber. Carefully strip the protective coating from the fiber itself according to the connector or splice specifications. Then, use a precision fiber cleaver to cut the fiber ends flat and perpendicular, ensuring a smooth end-face for optimal light transmission .

Step 3: Splicing or Re-Terminating
  • Fusion Splicing (Preferred for Permanent Repairs): Align the fiber ends in a fusion splicer, which welds them together with minimal signal loss. After splicing, protect the joint with a heat-shrink sleeve or protective tubing .
  • Mechanical Splicing: Use a mechanical splice kit with alignment guides and index-matching gel to join the fibers without welding. This method is suitable for temporary or field repairs .
  • Connector Re-Termination: If the break is near a connector, insert the stripped fiber into a compatible connector, secure it, and attach the connector boot. Use a visual fault locator to ensure proper seating .
Step 4: Test the Connection

After splicing or re-terminating, test the repaired cable using a visual fault locator or a fiber optic meter to verify signal continuity and low loss. For longer runs, an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) can help locate faults and measure signal loss accurately .

Step 5: Protect and Secure

Finally, ensure the repaired section is protected from environmental damage. Use protective sleeves, enclosures, or conduit to prevent future breaks from abrasion, rodents, or accidental cuts . By following these steps carefully, a broken fiber optic cable can be effectively repaired, restoring network connectivity with minimal signal loss.
