Distribution box trips but not all circuits trip

A distribution box may trip while individual circuits remain unaffected due to main RCD faults, cumulative earth leakage, or wiring issues.Common Causes

1. Main RCD Fault or Sensitivity The main RCD monitors the balance of current between live and neutral conductors. If it detects an imbalance (current leaking to earth), it trips to prevent electric shock or fire. Sometimes the main RCD itself is faulty or overly sensitive, causing it to trip even when individual MCBs or RCBOs do not operate . 2. Cumulative Earth Leakage Multiple devices across different circuits may each leak a small amount of current. Individually, these leaks are below the trip threshold of their respective breakers, but together they exceed the main RCD's limit, causing it to trip . 3. Shared Wiring or Neutral/Earth Issues Problems in shared wiring, such as incorrect neutral-to-earth connections or supply-side faults, can create imbalances that trigger the main RCD without affecting individual circuit breakers . 4. Overloads and Short Circuits While less common in this scenario, overloads or short circuits on a single circuit usually trip the corresponding MCB. However, if multiple circuits are slightly overloaded simultaneously, the main RCD may trip first to protect the system .

Diagnostic Steps
  • Visual Inspection: Check for signs of damage, overheating, or loose connections in the distribution box.
  • Load Assessment: Calculate the total load on each circuit to ensure it does not exceed the breaker's rating.
  • Device Isolation: Unplug or switch off appliances to identify if cumulative leakage is causing the trip.
  • Professional Testing: Use insulation testers or multimeters to check for earth faults or RCD malfunction.
Safety Considerations
  • Do not repeatedly reset a tripping RCD without identifying the cause.
  • If you notice burning smells, sparks, heat marks, or flickering lights, treat it as an urgent hazard and contact a qualified electrician immediately .
  • Regular maintenance and load balancing can reduce the risk of unexpected trips and prolong the life of breakers and RCDs . Understanding these factors helps ensure safe operation of your electrical system and prevents damage to appliances or risk of electric shock.
